Quick Facts

- Official Languages in Kosovo are Albanian and Serbian.

- Language of any community that constitutes five (5) per cent of the total population in any municipality will have the status of an official language.

- Language of any community that constitutes three (3) or more per cent of the total population in any municipality or has been traditionally spoken in a municipality can be used as a language in official use.
 
- In Prizren municipality, Turkish language has a status of an official language, as the traditional language.

Today, the Language Commissioner, Slavisa Mladenovic, attended the panel with the topic “True Importance of Multilingualism and Learning Languages”, co-organized by the Office of the Language Commissioner, British Embassy, IOM and UNMIK. The event was held in Prizren, as part of the “Dokufest” film festival
During the discussions, Commissioner Mladenovic, highlighted that institutions have to be more engaged, both at central and local level, when policies with regard to learning the domestic languages are drafted, as this is a necessary element and facilitates access to information for citizens, and also helps overcome barriers and fully implement the Law on Use of Languages.


Moreover, this debate was also attended by the British Ambassador, Mr. Ruairi O’Connell, Adrijana Hodzic, Minister of Local Government Administration, Mytahir Haskuka, Mayor of Prizren, and Lindita Rugova, Dean in the Faculty of Philology in the University of Prishtina.   


Finally, during this event was screened the documentary titled “With throat in Strawberries”: A taste of the multilingualism in Kosovo.


Office of the Language Commissioner was established in April 2012 under auspices of the Office of the Prime Minister, pursuant to Regulation br.07/2012. The Office is mandated to oversee the implementation of the law on languages, works with institutions to improve the implementation of the law and promote and protect the right on the use of the language of all communities in Kosovo
